Community Awareness Event Highlights the Hidden Impact of Commercial Tobacco
On May 2, 2026, the African Community Development Center (ACDC) hosted a community awareness event at 7801 NE 102nd Ave in Portland, Oregon. The gathering brought together members of African, immigrant, and refugee communities to shed light on a critical public health issue: the commercial tobacco industry’s use of targeted advertising, flavored products, and misleading marketing to influence vulnerable populations, particularly youth.
Attendees explored the serious health and economic consequences tied to commercial tobacco use and discussed practical, community-driven strategies families can use to prevent tobacco-related harm. The conversation emphasized the power of education, trusted community leadership, and access to resources that support healthier, tobacco-free living.
ACDC created a welcoming space for open dialogue and shared learning, reflecting its ongoing commitment to empowering communities with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions and protect future generations.
We are grateful to everyone who attended, shared their personal experiences, and helped make this event so impactful. Together, we can build healthier, stronger, tobacco-free communities across Portland and beyond.
