A Night of Unity: Cultural Connection & Empowerment Shines in Portland

Last night, the Portland community came together for a vibrant celebration of culture and community at the Cultural Connection & Empowerment Night. Hosted by the African Community Development Center in partnership with CAIRO, Somali Oregon Services, Somali Cultural Center, and the Southwest Somali Community, the event was a powerful testament to the strength and unity of our diverse community.

The atmosphere at the DoubleTree by Hilton was electric, filled with the warmth of shared heritage and a spirit of empowerment. Families and friends reconnected, and new bonds were formed, all celebrating the rich tapestry of our culture.

A Performance by a Living Legend

A major highlight of the evening was a special performance by the legendary Somali singer, Abdulkadir Hussein Mayow Buunis. Born in Mogadishu, Somalia, in 1969, Buunis has been a beloved figure since childhood. He is known for his unique and captivating high-toned voice, which has earned him a place among the most cherished artists in the community.

During the event, Buunis performed some of his most famous songs, including “Hello,” “Gariiree,” and “Bosnia,” which brought the audience to their feet.
